Our introductory course is designed for absolute beginners. In this course students will acquire an understanding of basic concepts and begin to develop their drawing skills.
We shall start at the rudimentary level by understanding the potential of the materials we’ll use, namely pencil and charcoal. We shall further study elements and principles of design and other crucial concepts through various exercises; these include: point, line, value, shape, form (volume), texture, as well as composition, balance, rhythm, and symmetry. Students will also learn measuring technique (the means to achieving accurate proportion), how to understand three dimensional space in two dimensional terms by learning one-point and two-point perspective and foreshortening, as well as classical ways of achieving depth, such as through aerial perspective. The study of color is excluded from the introductory drawing course.

Cancellations: Please, make sure that you know your schedule before signing up, and that you can actually attend the course. You may choose to be fully refunded (minus PayPal fees we paid for the initial transaction), or to get Aartwerk Credit (valid for six months), or to attend another course of the same (or lower) value. No one will be refunded after this. No one will be refunded twice in a row.

Painting I, Acrylic is the introduction to the fundamentals of painting. We warmly recommend taking this course prior to any other painting course, even if your ultimate medium of choice is oil. Acrylics are fast drying, water-based paints, and will allow for quicker exploration of various approaches to painting. Because of this, technical rules and planning process are (unlike with oils) virtually nonexistent in this course.
This said, the course will provide an in-depth introduction to color theory and invite students to begin to think about composition not just in terms of form and value but also with regard to color. As there is no one ‘right way’ to paint, we shall actively explore a variety of ways to begin and develop a painting, through hands-on investigation of concepts and techniques that these processes entail: tonal (under)painting, block-out (under)painting, wash, direct painting, layering, impasto, glazing, scumbling, dry-brushing, painting sgrafitto, etc. Incorporated in these processes are various technical questions that will also be answered: we shall learn about canvases, primers, stretchers, brushes, palette knives and other tools, paints, pigments, mediums, and more.
Oils are back! There is a revival of interest in oils, and we understand why you are eager to jump into exploring this beautiful medium. However, if you you are entirely new to painting, we recommend (but don’t require) working with acrylics first. (Should you wonder why, please read the course description for Acrylics I.)
The course will commence with an introduction to the medium. Students will learn the rules for proper usage and develop an understanding of the chemistry of the medium (in layman terms) for easier manipulation. As in the Acrylics I course, students will learn hands-on different ways in which one may start and develop a painting. (If you have worked with acrylics before, you will be able to appreciate the differences between the mediums: you will discover what oils allow for that acrylics do not, and vice versa. You may also decide to combine techniques—of course, in the correct manner.) Furthermore, students will explore concepts and techniques that these processes entail, e.g.: wipe-out technique, tonal (under)painting, block-out (under)painting, wash, direct painting, layering, alla prima (wet-on-wet), impasto, glazing, scumbling, dry-brushing, painting sgrafitto, and more. Incorporated in these processes are various technical questions that will be answered: we shall learn about canvases, primers/grounds, stretchers, brushes, palette knives and other tools, paints, pigments, oil mediums, etc.
The course is comprised of 8 two-hour classes.
You will receive an email with the information about materials when you register.
Discount available for students, Loyola employees and 60+. Give us a call.

PAINTING II
The Painting II course is open to all returning students who took at least one of the introductory painting courses, as well as for those who have previous experience outside the studio. This course focuses on developing your skill, personal language and body of work.
DRAWING II
This intermediate level drawing course will focus on the development of students’ drawing skills as well as their individual sensibility and artistic voice. Furthermore, in order to fully explore the potential of drawing, students will first be introduced to basic color theory and various new materials, including colored pencils, dry and oil pastels, marker pens andink.
At this level, students will have the liberty to choose their subject matter as well as to widen the range of materials they use based on their individual preferences. Students can choose to work ‘from life’ or two-dimensional sources (such as copying or reinterpreting great masters), but will be strongly encouraged towards the end of the course to create at least one original composition, whose elements are chosen and arranged entirely by you, the artist.

PAINTING FOR ALL
All levels are welcome to join this session! We found that mixture of begginers and more experienced students resulted in a very relaxed enviorment; we loved it! This is why we decided to make PAINTING FOR ALL an ongoing Monday session!
Dear begginers, instructor will work with you following Painting I program (please read more about it HERE), however- the session will most likely be joined by old students too. Please do not find this intimidating! It is interesting and helpful to see what others are working on.
